The City of Marbella Theatre hosted this morning the III Culture Awards, an event that was attended by the Councillor for Culture, Rafael Piña, the head of the area, Gema Midón, and the Councillor for Citizen Participation, Miguel Díaz.

Today we have interviewed the singer Mayte Martínez, known artistically as ‘La Negra Mayté’. Mayte, who started in 1986 with the pop group Cuerpo Diplomático and who has been part of the vocals of Pasión Vega.

A couple of years ago they released the CD Akoplarse in which they took the copla to their own terrain, dominated by new soul, and also covered other pop classics in a rather peculiar way. These days they are releasing their version of an American Christmas classic while they are preparing a new studio album, which will possibly be released in the spring.

We Interview the Fabulous Spanish Wedding Singer La Negra Mayte…

Today we offer a warm welcome to a very talented Costa del Sol-based wedding singer, La Negra Mayte. As an artist, this lady has such an impressive CV, working with producers such as Rob Davis, who produced songs for Kylie Minogue and Sophie Ellis Bextor. She has also collaborated with Ministry of Sound, performed in the National Theatre of Buenos Aires, performed for the UN in Kenya, provided backing singing for Chaka Khan, and been involved in the Eurovision Song Contest!

And that’s only scratching the surface of her musical accolades…

We are delighted to share our recent interview, which further showcases La Negra Mayte’s passion when it comes to helping brides and grooms create a memorable ceremony, as well as fantastic evening entertainment.

Thanks for talking with us today, La Negra Mayte…

When did your passion for singing really ignite?””

My passion for music comes from a very young age. My ?rst recording was at 3 years old and I professionally recorded my ?rst album in London at the age of 16. I can say that it was quite clear that I wanted to dedicate my life to music.

How long have you been singing at weddings on the Costa del Sol, and what can you offer to make the ceremony extra special and/or the party go off with a bang?

I can say that I have had the privilege and luck to work at a wide variety of events, but I must confess that weddings are the most emotional and special event of all. I can almost remember every wedding that I have ever sung at, and there is always something unique that differentiates them. I try to help the bridal couple however I can; for example to choose what song they would like on their walk up the aisle, or their ?rst dance, basically ensuring the music will always remind them of this unforgettable day.

What is your favourite singing style for a wedding?”’

I have an extensive repertoire with a wide variety of styles. I love all jazz, soul and funk classics, and I research and update my list with the most requested songs. Although the bride and groom always have the last word, of course!

The San Pedro Alcántara Fair kicked off yesterday, Tuesday 16th October, with the official opening ceremonies led by the reading of the opening speech, which this year was given by the artist Mayte Martínez, better known in the world of music as “La Negra Mayté”.

A journey through her fondest memories of childhood in the Barrio de la Divina Pastora and later of her youth, when she discovered her artistic vocation in the 80’s, were the common thread of a proclamation full of musical winks in which Mayte Martínez delighted the audience at the Caseta Municipal.

‘With this proclamation I would like to pay tribute to all those who, without knowing it, did their bit, helping me to become what I am today as a person and an artist’, said an emotional pregonera who did not want to miss the opportunity to highlight the great pool of musicians currently existing in San Pedro Alcántara: “There is a new batch of very young musicians, with a desire for a lot of war and a good one. We have to thank all these academies and workshops of dance, theatre, cinema, singing classes and rock schools that do this essential work for culture, instilling great values, including keeping children away from those activities that discourage social interaction, in these times when music, in particular, is not going through its best creative or rhythmic moment”…

San Pedro starts its “Semana Grande” tonight. The heads of the mayor’s office Rafael Piña and Manuel Osorio told us about the novelties for this year’s fair and fiestas. The protagonist of the night in San Pedro, the “pregonera La Negra Mayte” visited our studios to outline the lines of her proclamation. The singer Mayte Martínez will be the town crier of the Fiestas of San Pedro AlcántaraThe Fair and Fiestas of San Pedro Alcántara already has its town crier. This year, the singer Mayte Martínez, popularly known as “La negra Mayté”, will be in charge of giving the chupinazo of one of the most important fiestas in the municipality. This was announced yesterday by the Deputy Mayor, Rafael Piña, at a press conference, which was also attended by Martínez, and the head of Fiestas, María Guerra.

The artist, as well as expressing her surprise at being chosen to give the speech, explained that “to proclaim the fair is an illusion and an honour. I hope to be up to the task with a proclamation in which I will bring back memories and experiences in San Pedro”…

The singer Mayte Martínez, better known as ‘La Negra Mayté’, opened the 2018 San Pedro Alcántara Fair this Tuesday night with a long, musical and, above all, very sampedreño proclamation, in which she named many family members, friends, colleagues, places …. and which was also full of memories.

The town crier, who was born in Tangiers, recalled her first photograph when she was only ten months old in San Pedro Alcántara, where she has spent the rest of her life and where she trained professionally.

It has been 23 minutes of speech, which has begun singing a fragment of ‘Mediterráneo’ by Serrat and has closed in a Lina Morgan style with ‘Gracias por venir’…

The production “Retap”, by the creator Víctor Marín, has been awarded the prize for Best International Short Film at the Colombia Horror Festival in Bogotá.

The short film combines different animation and live-action techniques and features, among other actors, Darko Peric, who plays Helsinki in “La Casa de Papel”.

Retap’ has also involved modellers who have worked with film director Steven Spielberg and features an end-of-project song by La Negra Mayté and Emi Barés….
